Parallels and Paradoxes: Explorations in Music and Society
Published in Hardcover by Pantheon Books (01 October, 2002)
Authors: Daniel Barenboim, Edward W. Said, and Ara Guzelimian
Average review score:

Two cultures, one uniting force
Having heard Barenboim and Said interviewed on NPR I rushed to Amazon to acquire this book. I was not disppointed! These are highly literate men, wise men, who see music in a social context. Although their roots are Israeli and Palestinian, their exposure to other cultures has broadened their perspectives so that their opinions are informed by their experiences in Egypt, Argentina, America, Germany, Israel, etc. The continuing theme is music, especially that of Beethoven and later Wagner, but in the context of their societies and ours. It may be that the hope forpeace in the world is shared music!

A Book So Full
If there is a book that presents valuable and valid lessons in how to resolve differences, be they in attitudes towards the arts, the lack of music in our educational system, the etiology of the Israeli/Palestinian dichotomy, and so much more, then this collection of conversations between Daniel Barenboim and Edward W. Said as edited and synthesized by Ara Guzelimian is it. This powerful but too brief book reaches for the Nobel Peace Prize in its courage, exploration of the state of man and the possibilities for the future, and in its tremendously accessible format that makes the workings of these three great minds available for us all. Each of the extended conversations taped betaween 1995 and 1999 addresses an interesting topic that serves to open vistas that go far beyond the crux of the topic. Hearing Barenboim expound on the fact that no one can exactly interpret a composer's score because the spirit is not on the page but in the making and experiencing the 'sound' that happens in a live performance rather obliterates all critics who descry individual interpretation of the great composers as "not the composer's intention!" Said carries this into the realm of literature, suggesting that contemporary writers are where they are because of the giants of the past and that we, as readers, are influenced in our interpretation of new work dependent upon our exposure and digestion of works by the old masters. Contemporary music by composers such as Carter, Schoenberg, and Birtwistle are discussed in a way that assists our concept of listening and learning in the concert hall. Similar parallels and similar paradoxes in the international political arena are given the same level of inspiring dialog and paths to understanding. This is a fine, fine book and we are indebted to Ara Guzelimian not only for his written and conversational contributions, but for persevering in having this volume published. Read this and gain insight and intelligence on many streams of thought that will help us all save this planet.

Parenting from the Inside-Out: How a Deeper Self-Understanding Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive

Gems of insight and clinical expertise
Collaboratively written by skilled child psychiatrist Daniel J. Sigel and parenting educator Mary Hartzell, Parenting From The Inside Out: How A Deeper Self-understanding Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive is a thoroughly "reader friendly" psychological guide to improving one's parenting skills through improved self-understanding and through learning from one's own childhood experiences. Presented in terms accessible to parents of all backgrounds, Parenting From The Inside Out offers gems of insight and clinical expertise and is a strongly recommended addition to personal and community library Parenting Skills reading lists and reference shelves.

As simple as it is profound, as warm as it is scientific
It's impossible to say something can change your life without slipping into cliche-land, but this book is all about the possibility of change and the crux of life: brain, to mind, to heart, and though the book is too grounded in science to say it, to soul; it's the neurology behind the fact that mind is love; but more than anything the ideas in this book are simply fascinating and useful! I have read other work by Dan Siegel and each time I revisit his sythesis of brain science, attachment theory and a warm-hearted psychiatrist's view of Buber's I-Thou, I am filled with new thoughts and emotions.

The Paris Review

Does anybody know?
If it is possible to secure The Paris Review - Interview with writers published by Penguin through the 1970's and 80's

fantastic read
The Paris Review is the best literary magazine around (even though they've rejected all of my stories). But anyway, the interview and stories are top notch. I love the blend of unknown writers and famous writers. This issue is especially good, for it's a concept issue, "New British Writing." The forum is excellent, with each author asked to give their opinion on, of course, the state of "British" literature. Furthermore, George Plimpton is very inspiring. Just reading an issue wants to make you write better or start your own magazine.

Peace is Everybody's Business : Half a Century of Peace Education with Elizabeth Evans Baker
Published in Paperback by Juniata College Press (01 November, 1999)
Author: Marta Daniels
Average review score:

A superbly written biography and "peace study".
Peace is Everybody's Business focuses on the peace making efforts of Elizabeth Baker and her husband, peace advocates and educators who proved pioneers in the field in the last part of the 20th century. Readers receive both an excellent biography of Baker and a focus on the establishment of peace studies in higher education. The latter is especially important as few books have examined this process.

Elizabeth Baker's Quest for Peace
THIS IS MY FINAL REVISED VERSION OF THIE REVIEW. SORRY FOR THE PREVIOUS ATTEMPT. jack troy wrote: Elizabeth Evans Baker's Quest for Peace Reviewer: jack troy from Huntingdon, PA USA

Elizabeth Evans Baker (1902-1990) led a full life as First Lady at Ohio University, founder of the Monomoy Theatre on Cape Cod, as an actress, mother, patron of the arts, and poet, but her inner tuning-fork vibrated for the cause of peace. She struggled with an ancient human dilemma - how to discover and use moral imagination as an alternative to violence in resolving conflicts. Because she and her husband were in a position to put their ideals into action, they were instrumental in funding peace studies programs at a number of colleges, but Elizabeth was the driving force, as Marta Daniels documents in her well-organized, and clearly-written book. Elizabeth Baker was in a position to do something about the sad fact that America has a War College, but no Peace College. Her response was not only personal (as Daniels shows, through excerpts from EEB's diaries), but far-reaching, since she helped fund and organize peace-studies programs devoted to what has become known as "irenology" - the systematic, interdisciplinary study of the causes of war and the conditions of peace. Her dedication helped establish and enlarge an awareness that has materialized so that nearly 200 U. S. colleges now offer courses and undergraduate degree-granting and certificate-granting Peace Studies programs. As I read this book I was struck by the degree to which Mrs. Baker's idealism found pragmatic expression with enduring effects, as authenticated by her persistence for 20 years to make possible Maya Lin's Peace Chapel at Juniata College in central Pennsylvania. Visiting the site helps me realize what this book documents: that art and peace can be as linked in locale as they were in the mind and spirit of Elizabeth Evans Baker.

People Everyday and other poems
Published in Paperback by Green Bean Press (01 July, 1998)
Authors: Daniel Crocker and Gerald Locklin
Average review score:

short and sweet - buy the book
The simple truth is that this book needs to be read. This book turned me into a fan of Crocker and of Green Bean Press as well. The book is well done on all levels and Crocker's voice will stay with you for a good long while after reading. Order the book. You'll be supporting small press poetry in america and be reading one of its finest voices.

seemingly puked verse of humanism
I had the honor of reading with the author at a poetry reading early in 1998. I was blown away. A meek, meek individual until he grips a pen (and beer). I later performed with him, him merely reading and myself having to resort to performance art to keep up.

The book: his first book. The opening poem, "Sorry Richie" is a rich work that everyone can tap into at some level.

All the works contained in this volume possess a human quality of not being "forced" onto the page. The words reside there. This is until one READS the work. The writer took two years off to read and it shows: subtlely, and that is were his genius lies. As with his personality, his power lies in how he slides and incorporates the subconscious barbs in to snag the reader. One is drug in, but is unsure why or how, he or she just is--and likes it.

A great work yet his more recent work is a more dense, more rewarding work. Watch out for his upcoming collection of short stories.

Periodontics: In the Tradition of Gottlieb and Orban
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (September, 1987)
Author: Daniel Grant
Average review score:

This text is considered essential reading for periodontists
This text is Dr.Grant's legacy to the study of periodontology and clinical practice of periodontics. He was the senior author on this text for more than thirty years. He was a world renowned lecturer, researcher and practitioner. He continued teaching and research until four months prior to his death in April of 1998. Many of his research papers are required reading in classical periodontal literature for periodontal residents. His text remains a wealth of knowledge and instruction for clinical practice. His eulogy was published in the Journal of Periodontology in August of 1998. It details many of his accomplishments as well as the high regard in which he was held by his colleagues.

Petrified Wood : The World of Fossilized Wood, Cones, Ferns, and Cycads
Published in Hardcover by Western Colorado Publishing Company (01 September, 1998)
Authors: Frank J. Daniels, Brooks B. Britt, and Richard D. Dayvault
Average review score:

Blaze of color
As the various reviews point out this book is a blaze of color. Excellently photographed and excellently printed this volume gives a good impression of how beautiful petrified wood can be. This work is perfectly suited as a coffee table book.

As a wood anatomist I cannot help feeling that an even more beautiful book could be produced by shifting the focus to anatomy: when magnified these woods would look even better. I guess a palaeobotanist would agree with me that this would make for, from a scientific point of view, a more usable and valuable book.

Nevertheless this is a magnificent piece of work: there are some quite stunning pictures in here.

Petrified Wood: The World of Fossilized Wood
The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.

Phantom Guardians: The F-4 in the Air National Guard (Osprey Colour Series)

Very Nice Phantom Picture Book
Pictures of the F-4C, F-4D, F-4E, and the RF-4C Phantoms in the ANG. High quality Phantom pictures in different paint schemes. Most photos are suitable for hanging on the wall.

Excellent color photos of the Phantom
Although there is no technical data of the F-4 in this book, the color photos of the Phantoms in this book are very nice.It shows the Phantoms final days in the late 80's. Very well done book. But if you really love the F-4, you should also buy "Spirit In The Skies" by Jon Lake.....it is by far the best Phantom book written to date.....I still recommend the book "Phantom Guardians" to any F-4 lover.
